Winter in Basye
Skiing, Ullr Fest, fresh powder, and cozy cabin nights.

On the Mountain
Winter is Bryce Resort’s signature season — and the mountain delivers. Hit the slopes for skiing or snowboarding, glide around the outdoor ice skating rink, or float down the snow tubing lanes with the kids. Ski school and rentals are available on-site, so no gear or experience required. When you’re done, warm up at the lodge with a hot drink and views of the snow-covered ridgeline.
Hiking
Winter opens up a different side of the trails — bare trees mean longer views, crisp air, and a quiet you won’t find any other time of year. Pack layers, a pair of trekking poles, and a neck gaiter — then hit the ridge.

Runkles Gap Trail
Bare trees mean extended ridge views in every direction. A rewarding winter climb with fewer crowds and a whole lot of quiet.

Lookout Mountain Trail
Right from Bryce Resort — a short climb to ridge views. Perfect for a brisk morning hike before or after a day on the slopes.

Stony Creek Valley Walk
A flat, peaceful walk along the creek through the valley floor. Beautiful in snow, and easy enough for any pace.

Outdoors
Winter in the Allegheny Mountains has a stillness that’s hard to find anywhere else. Here’s what’s worth your time this season.

Skiing & Snowboarding
Bryce’s slopes are open all winter for skiers and snowboarders of every level. Ski school and rentals make it easy for first-timers — no gear or experience required. Bringing your own? A good helmet and goggles make all the difference.

Snow Tubing
Race down the tubing lanes at Bryce Resort — a guaranteed hit with kids and adults alike. No experience needed. Just hang on and enjoy the ride. (Tuck a few hand warmers in your pockets — you’ll thank yourself.)

Ice Skating
Lace up and hit the outdoor ice skating rink at Bryce Resort. A perfect winter afternoon activity for families, couples, and anyone who wants to channel their inner Olympian.

Pond Skimming – Bryce Resort’s annual spring send-off: skiers and snowboarders race down the slope and attempt to skim across an icy pond at the base of the mountain. Costumes are strongly encouraged (start here). Check the events calendar for this year’s date.

Day Trips
Winter opens up a quieter side of the Shenandoah Valley. Here are a few day trips worth making from Basye in the colder months.

Luray Caverns
~45 min · The caverns stay a constant 54°F year-round — actually warmer than outside in January. A spectacular underground escape.

Woodstock, VA
~25 min · A charming small town with local restaurants and shops — great for a low-key winter afternoon when you want to get off the mountain.

Skyline Drive
~50 min · Snow-dusted ridge views along the Blue Ridge. Check road conditions before you go and pack a winter emergency kit — but on a clear winter day, it’s unforgettable.
